How To Create a Gallery Wall in Your Home

When you move into a new home and all of the walls are blank, it can be an overwhelming task to try to fill the walls. Figuring out which photos and art look best the walls has always been a work in progress for me. It often takes me a few months to settle into a home before I decide how I want to decorate our new surroundings.
One of the most fun ways to decorate your home is with a gallery wall. You can tell the story of your family on one wall, or stick to a cohesive theme that best represents your life.
Our family hadn’t had professional photos taken since my younger son was born, and he recently turned 18 months old. So, when I decided that I wanted to make the very long wall by the main entrance of our home into a gallery wall, I knew that we needed to have new photos taken. We headed to Portrait Innovations in Pembroke Pines (South Florida) to have updated professional photos of our family taken.
My little boys are two and a half years old and one and a half years old (they’re 13.5 months apart!) and they were not cooperating at the Portrait Innovations studio. I was terrified to see how our photos would turn out.
The professional photographers did an amazing job, and our photos turned out perfect for my gallery wall!
Once my 16x20 print arrived in the mail, it was time to get to work on the wall!
When you’re designing a gallery wall, there are no “rules.” I like to stick to a main color scheme, such as all white and light frames or all black frames. I also love to incorporate little trinkets that are not photos.
The main tools that you’ll need are: hammer, nails, a level, and blue painters tape. Trust me on the level and painters tape!
I suggest laying your photos out on the floor in the design that you’d like on the wall. One of my favorite tricks is to measure the distance from hook-to-hook on the back of each frame with the blue painter’s tape and use that on the wall to know where to place the nails.
I also use the tape to measure out evenly spaced guidelines on the wall. to help me know where to hang the photos.
The gallery wall at the entrance of our home came out nicely, and I absolutely love how our new Portrait Innovations photos look on the wall!
